There has been the usually year-end flurry of articles trumpeting statistics about how many of us make New Year's resolutions, and how quickly most of us abandon them. While the numbers vary, they all agree that the prognosis for your resolutions is...well...not promising.
Still, a new year feels like a blank page...a fresh start of sorts, an opportunity to do better, and it's hard to resist the urge to make some promises to oneself about the things we're going to do right in the next year.
Resolutions may not stick, but I have pretty good luck with to do lists. Therefore, in lieu of resolutions, I've decided to simply make a list of things to do before 2010 runs out on us. Here's my top 10 things to do in 2010:
- Become Queen of the Speedlights
- Complete a 365 photo project
- Photowalk at least once every 2 weeks
- Get to know 2 new neighborhoods outside my own and Times Square
- Learn to use my slow cooker
- Eat less restaurant and packaged food, and instead eat primarily real food with pronounceable ingredients
- Read a book recreationally each month.
- Set and achieve SMART (Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic, and Time-sensitive) goals for Paper Swan Photography, my wedding photography business. (See Dr. Neil Hair? I was listening!)
- Go out and meet new people at a social, recreational, or business networking event each week.
- Reconnect with, or get to know more about, 5 people each week.
And bonus number 11...BLOG!!!
So there's the list. No resolutions there--certainly no grand plans to ban carbohydrates or magically become an early morning gym rat--just a few things to make sure I do over the next 12 months.
I think it's doable.
Happy New Year!!
